Geranium Blessing dress

It all started when I saw a blog post by Ashley about how she made a blessing dress for her baby girl. It never occurred to me that someone could actually make their own blessing or christening dress or that they would even want to! I devoured that post, I read every single detail in her tutorial like I was starving and it was my first meal in years.

Well a few years and another boy later I let that dream slip by, I figured I never would make one at this point so why dream about it? Then we had an ultrasound and found out that we were expecting a girl, a real girl and suddenly my dreams of making girly things came to life! It took only a couple months to realize 2 things, I was having my 5th baby and had less time than ever to sew, secondly in my dreams I could sew like a mad woman but in reality I am a slow sewer and have limited projects I can finish.

With little time I had I decided to use a dress my sister had given me with my 1st baby (I wanted a girl from the start) but never was able to use. A week before the blessing date I looked at the blog post that I devoured years earlier and decided I needed to make a dress for my little girl. It would be something I would regret the rest of my life if I did not.

I realized that my most favorite dress pattern ever was the perfect fit for what I wanted; I had made it so many times it would be quick and I loved the design. I thought about it for days and then found all my fabric surprisingly around the house. A new but too small men’s dress shirt and a barely used sheer curtain became Violets dress. Everything was perfect. I made the smallest size in the bodice. For the skirt portion, I sized up one size and added extra fullness, and then I added the sheer layers on top before sewing together. I embroidered a little floral pattern along the neckline and the dress I had seen so many times in my mind became real.

This dress was the embodiment of years of yearning and dreams that I never thought would be realized. It is funny how something so materialistic can hold so much emotion, isn’t it?

A simple dress for baby girls

Hello friends! Its been a long while!
In case you were wondering having a baby girl is everything I ever dreamed of! I sometimes look at her and wonder if its real and if I really have this perfect little baby girl <3 I love it and so do my boys!
My sewing has been very little the last few months and at the rate babies grow I haven't kept up with pictures as much as I'd like.

One of the dresses that I made that was worn over and over during the summer was this adorable number. It was such an easy sew and so cute we received many compliments over it every single wear. People were usually so impressed that it was handmade, if only they knew how easy it was! My sewing with 5 kids and homeschooling (did I mention we are doing that again this year?) all my projects of late need to be fast and easy so this dress has been repeated 2-3 times and worn a lot.

This little guy is taking having a sister quite well, as you can see, they absolutely love each other!
I made this dress using a free pattern from Sew Much Ado and a matching diaper cover from Made Everydays free pattern. I really like those two patterns a lot and they were very easy to make!
I can see more sewing for girls in the future of this blog! I do sew for my boys too, although, with a 12 year old in the same size as a mens small I don't do as much for the older boys anymore.

Floral Geranium

Right before Violet was born I made the cutest little geranium! I decided to go a different color route than I would have normally chosen and I love the combination!

This is 3-6 month size and it looks like it will be fitting Violet in the fall so the colors are perfect!
I can just imagine this with a cute pair of cowgirl boots <3 I need to get some for my little girl! Do they come in baby sizes? I guess I'll find out!

With this dress I finally mastered my button-holer!
I haven't used it much because button holes frighten me but this dress was the first I've ever made that I felt confident, they turned out great and were pretty quick compared to my other tries.

I haven't hemmed the dress in these photos, oops, blame it on pregnancy procrastination, lol!
The fabric was from my stash that might be from Joanns. It doesn't really wash the best and gets wrinkly so I'm not sure how it will hold up over time.

Hazelbee Baby Dress

When we found out we were having a girl I immediately wanted a woven dress pattern (the geranium) and a knit dress pattern that I could use as a staple for our baby girl. I asked my facebook group what knit dress pattern would be good and a lot of people recommended the Hazelbee Baby Dress so I purchased it and have been very pleased!

I made the crossover option since I wanted one for our girl to wear as soon as possible and the crossover is the only option in the bundle that goes down to 0-3 months.

Here is our sweet girl wearing it! The fabric I used has very little stretch and fits her perfectly, well its a little big but that is perfect for a newborn :0) In this picture Violet is 6lbs 7oz so you can see it fits a small baby.

I really love how it fits and it was sooo easy to put on! I love that its a dress but the comfort of a newborn gown!

The sewing was flawlessly easy and I finished it in under an hour, I think in about 30 minutes, which as I've mentioned before I am not a fast sewer. I go at my own pace which can take a bit more time ;0) this pattern was easy and had a layer option for printing that I've not had the privilege of using before, it was awesome! Seriously love this pattern! I need to make a few more for her, yes I need to even though her drawers are plumb full, haha! Girls I love finally having one!!!
